State election in Bavaria: Individual glitches in postal voting in Würzburg and Landshut – Bavaria

In Würzburg, some voters were apparently unable to cast their votes in the Bavarian state elections on Sunday. There was a technical glitch when sending postal voting documents at the beginning of September: one of the print jobs was not fully processed on one day, affecting a total of 3,000 voting slips. The city processed all individual applications and sent them out by the end of September.

But there may also have been “postal problems” when forwarding, says a city spokesman. In any case, “a few people” showed up at polling stations on Sunday who said they had not received any postal voting documents. They were allowed to request these documents directly from the city by Saturday, 12 noon; This is what was stated on the election notifications.

If they didn’t do this, they weren’t actually allowed to vote on Sunday, says the city spokesman – otherwise the risk of a double vote would have been too great. However, such cases were not observed more frequently in Würzburg than in other elections – despite the breakdown at the beginning of September.

Eligible voters from Landshut apparently felt the same way. They had not received their postal voting documents and were now not allowed to vote. The city assures that it sent the documents on time. There were a total of 17,500 postal voters in Landshut. It is not yet clear how many of them were unable to vote because they reported too late that they had not received voting documents. So far, the city is reporting cases in the single digits. And in Freising, too, voting documents that were requested online apparently did not reach some voters in time.
