A woman is missing after her group was surprised by a flash flood while canyoning in the Starzlach Gorge near Sonthofen (Oberallgäu district). After a strong thunderstorm, several athletes in the group were trapped and partially swept away by the rapidly rising water on Saturday afternoon, the police said. Two men were injured, some seriously.

The woman, 27 years old according to media reports, was not found until late in the evening, it said. According to the police, a large-scale search and rescue operation had to be canceled due to the darkness. It is scheduled to continue on Sunday morning. In addition to the mountain and water rescue service, fire brigade and THW, a rescue helicopter was also used.

Canyoning is crossing a gorge by abseiling, climbing, jumping, sliding and swimming.
