Anyone who would like to charge their electric car at home with solar power in the future can apply for new state funding from KfW from today. But there are a few things to consider.
E-cars are considered the vehicles of the future. Thanks to government funding, sales are increasing rapidly. But the public charging network in Germany is still patchy. According to the Federal Network Agency, there were 90,000 public charging options in April this year. This means: Statistically speaking, there are currently 23 cars per charging station.
Grant up to 10,200 euros
If you own your own home and have enough space, a private charging station is an alternative – and powered by solar power directly from the roof, the car can be charged in a green way. This is made possible by a combination of charging station, photovoltaic system and solar power storage. The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) is now supporting the purchase and installation of this with up to 10,200 euros.
You can apply for the grant from September 26th. The funding is limited to a total of 500 million euros – so around 50,000 electric car owners would benefit if the maximum rate were paid out. However, the funding is linked to certain requirements.
These are the conditions
First of all, it must be a residential building that you can own; condominiums are out of the question, as are holiday homes and new buildings that are still under construction. The electric car must also be available or at least already ordered. Hybrid vehicles as well as company and company cars are excluded.
The funding amount is also linked to the type of system. However, an existing charging station may be supplemented with a photovoltaic system and storage. If the entire purchase is made, the charging station is funded with a maximum of 1,200 euros, the photovoltaic system with a maximum of 6,000 euros and the solar power storage system with a maximum of 3,000 euros.

In this case, there would be a personal contribution of 24,000 euros.
Record funding amount in the past year
The KfW Reconstruction Bank is one of the world’s leading development banks. In 2022, projects were funded with a record total of 166.9 billion euros – an increase of 56 percent compared to the previous year. A large part of the money was intended to cushion the economic consequences of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine – for example by ensuring energy supplies and relieving the burden on households and companies
