An unusual XXL winter begins for the ski jumpers this weekend. “We’ve never had such a long season. It starts earlier, but everything is a bit more equalized up to the Four Hills Tournament, there are one or the other quiet minute that didn’t otherwise exist,” said Germany’s top athlete Karl Geiger the start in Wisla, Poland, which this time will be held on mats.

By December at the latest, “then it’s going to be really tough, one after the other, with long journeys, world championships, ski flying. You should be in good shape after the tour and save your heart.”

It usually starts at the end of November and jumps to March. This time, because of the soccer World Cup in Qatar, things will start at the beginning of November and continue into April. Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger said: “We actually have the right kickoff in December, when we start the World Cups weekend after weekend.” The Bavarian asks himself in view of the unusual appointments: “Are we doing it right with our competitions? Or is football doing it right with its competitions? Others have to decide that too.”

Geiger, Wellinger and Co. have to master several highlights this winter. The traditional Four Hills Tournament takes place around the turn of the year. The Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica, the Raw Air series in Norway and the end of the ski flying season will follow in the new year.
