The Burgtheater’s new image campaign consists of combative slogans printed in large black letters on red posters or banners. “Wake up before it gets dark again” is what it says. What is meant by the darkness is the shift to the right that is going through Austria and Europe. This sentence is also the season motto of the last season under Martin Kušej as director. Right-wing extremists and lateral thinkers regularly marched past the Burgtheater as part of the anti-corona demonstrations, Kušej said at a recent event. More than once the protest degenerated into “insults, smear campaigns and disruption of performances.” The Burgtheater wants to counter this with “clear positions and attitudes”. Kušej is also combative in the foreword to the season booklet: “We cannot and must not look away or hide behind the facade of apolitical art. This is what I stand for in the last season of my directorship at the Burgtheater.”
