Start in December: Commission of experts to deal with election breakdowns in Berlin

Berlin is setting up a commission of experts to deal with the election breakdowns. The Senate announced that it was decided at a meeting on Tuesday at the suggestion of the Senator for Internal Affairs and Sport, Andreas Geisel (SPD).

The 20-person commission of experts will start work at the beginning of December, it said. The members come from the fields of law, science, administration and civil society. It also includes practitioners from the election organization in Berlin and other federal states.

In the elections to the German Bundestag, the Berlin House of Representatives, the district council assemblies and the vote on a referendum on September 26, 2021, numerous problems and irregularities occurred in the capital. The so-called “Expert Commission for Elections in Berlin” should now systematically process the incidents, the Senate said. This should result in recommendations for action for the implementation of future elections.

It is important that the incidents “are analyzed by an independent commission and assessed openly,” said Geisel. “We have to regain lost trust,” said the SPD politician. It must be ensured for the future that the problems do not recur.

The Federal Returning Officer appealed against the results of the Bundestag election in six Berlin constituencies last week. On the same day, the Senate Interior Administration lodged an objection to the election to the House of Representatives.
