If you just read the headline press release, which the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) sent out on Tuesday about its cutback plans that have been under discussion for weeks, then one could say: Phew, got the curve again. “Funding of projects in the social sciences and humanities ensured,” it said. Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) admitted that there had been “regrettable delays”. However, she emphasized that “despite the difficult budgetary situation” it had been possible “that no ongoing research projects had to be canceled and that as many projects as possible could be funded”.
