JJ Abrams has completed the sequel trilogy with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film is now celebrating its free TV premiere.

Oscar night is coming up. The awards ceremony on the night of March 28th is the highlight of the year for many film fans. This can be followed in this country on ProSieben. From 11:10 p.m., Steven Gätjen (49) and the show “red” prepare for the glamorous evening with the “Oscar Countdown – Live from the Red Carpet”. Before that there will be a prominent free TV premiere from 8:15 p.m. with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”: That’s what fans can expect in JJ Abrams’ (55) conclusion of the sequel trilogy.

The film, which was released in cinemas in December 2019, aims to be nothing less than the conclusion of the Skywalker saga and thus the last chapter in the story that began in 1977 with “Star Wars”. The original trilogy told Luke Skywalker’s journey from junior Jedi to master, the prequel trilogy told how his father Anakin became Darth Vader.

Recent films revolve around Rey (Daisy Ridley, 29). And she is on an equal footing with her adversary Kylo Ren (Adam Driver, 38), Luke Skywalker’s nephew. Where she got her powers from is not known until “Episode IX”, but “The Rise of Skywalker” answers many questions.

This is what Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is all about

After Snoke’s death, Kylo Ren is the new leader of the First Order. With the help of a Sith wayfinder, he manages to track down Emperor Palpatine, who was presumed dead, and orders him to kill Rey. This, in turn, is the last hope of the resistance, hopelessly defeated by the enemy’s troops…

The film gives these answers – warning, slight spoilers!

After the predecessor, “The Last Jedi”, many fans were sobered. Were Rey’s parents really just simple scrap collectors who left their daughter alone on the desert planet Jakku? It was to be expected that “Episode IX” director JJ Abrams would not let that stand. Rey’s lineage is paramount to the conclusion of the Skywalker saga…

Leia actress Carrie Fisher (1956-2016) died in 2016. Thanks to unused, twisted scenes, Leia can still play a crucial role in “The Rise of Skywalker”. The leader of the rebels takes over Rey’s Jedi training and the contact to her son Ben, who has gone over to the dark side as Kylo Ren, has not yet been completely broken off. In the end, Leia gets a fitting farewell.

More than ever, Kylo Ren wants one thing above all: to inherit the legacy of his grandfather, Darth Vader. But as in the previous films, Ben, who killed his own father Han Solo (Harrison Ford, 79), remains torn. Also regarding his relationship with Rey.

Since the first film in the sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens, Star Wars has had a cast of new heroes. In addition to Rey, Finn (John Boyega, 30), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac, 43) and his droid BB-8 shine again in “Episode IX”. Together with Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO, they not only provide lots of action, but also some fun. In addition, there are guest appearances by old “Star Wars” heroes and well-known sayings in the last part of the Skywalker saga…

Conclusion

Director JJ Abrams had to process a lot of material for the film and some things seem a bit unclear, one or the other scene kitschy. But the flick has a lot of highlights and strengths – quite apart from the many action scenes – and brings the mystical side of the “Star Wars” story to life again.

Together with legendary places and locations that were important in the other two trilogies, as well as many small allusions to the older predecessor films, “Episode IX” makes a worthy final chapter – and an entertaining start into the night of the Oscar ceremony.
