Standing up against the right: Brown danger and the role of the media – Media

Hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated against right-wing extremism in the past few days: the trigger was the media company’s research Corrective to a secret meeting between AfD politicians, CDU members and key fascist figures, at which deportation plans for people with and without an immigration history were discussed. What role does the media play in civil society’s broad protest against the brown danger? Should part of the media public be accused of having underestimated right-wing extremism in the past? And at the same time, were democratic counter-movements in civil society neglected in the media?

Also in the current episode: An interview with the communication scientist Marcus Maurer from the Institute for Journalism at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. In a new study, he examined the diversity of perspectives in the news formats of public broadcasting. This diversity has been called into question again and again in recent years: not only when it comes to the lack of representation of, for example, people with an immigration history or people of East German origin. There is also the accusation of political imbalance. It is repeatedly said that public media prefer one-sided left-wing and progressive positions – what is the truth? The results of the representative study were presented at the first Civis media dialogue on January 25, 2024 in Berlin. Marcus Maurer talks about his investigation with the quoted hosts, the communication scientist Nadia Zaboura and the SZ journalist Nils Minkmar.
