Squad for the European Football Championship: Nagelsmann does without Goretzka and Hummels – Sport

National coach Julian Nagelsmann has named 27 players in his provisional squad for the European Football Championship in Berlin. Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund and Leon Goretzka from FC Bayern and the currently injured Serge Gnabry are not there. Hummels and Goretzka have been regular players in the national team in the past and will now miss the tournament in Germany.

With the squad for the home European Championship, Nagelsmann is continuing the directional decisions that the 36-year-old made before the international matches in March against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1). The only new players are Munich’s Leroy Sané, who was suspended at the time, Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and, surprisingly, goalkeeper Alexander Nübel from VfB Stuttgart, who has not yet played an international match.

In a multimedia announcement by the DFB, 18 European Championship drivers had already been announced since Sunday, including captain Ilkay Gündogan, regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and tournament newcomers such as Florian Wirtz from champions Bayer Leverkusen and Aleksandar Pavlovic from FC Bayern. Nine more players were added in Berlin, including Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller. Only twelve players from the 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are back.

The official squad list with a maximum of 26 names does not have to be sent to the European football association Uefa until June 7th. Nagelsmann still has to delete one player. If a German outfield player were to sustain a serious injury before the opening game on June 14th in Munich and a UEFA doctor would confirm this injury, they would be allowed to do so according to the tournament regulations Even after that, players can be nominated and replace the injured person. More seriously injured goalkeepers may even be replaced during the tournament.

Also on Thursday, the DFB announced that, after Nagelsmann, the rest of the coaching team had also extended their contracts until the 2026 World Cup. Accordingly, assistants Sandro Wagner and Benjamin Glück will remain there, as will goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg and set-piece specialist Mads Buttgereit. “I’m extremely happy that my team has extended the contract. That was a basic requirement for me to continue,” said Nagelsmann. “Everyone was very quick to get excited like I was to continue on the path.” It is well known that “as a boss you are only as good as the team around you,” explained Nagelsmann. This is also “a good signal” for the team.

Host Germany opens the European Championship finals against Scotland on June 14th in Munich. The final will take place on July 14th in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
