Bundeswehr officer charged with spying for Russia

Seven months after the arrest, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office brought charges against the former Bundeswehr soldier Thomas H., who is said to have worked for a Russian secret service. In one case, he is said to have transmitted information that he obtained during his professional activity in the Bundeswehr’s procurement office in Koblenz, as the authority in Karlsruhe announced on Tuesday. H. was arrested in August and is in custody.

According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, from May 2023 he contacted the Russian Embassy in Berlin and the Consulate General in Bonn on his own initiative. He is now accused of acting as a secret service agent and violating official secrecy. The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court will decide whether to admit the charges.
