The Dutch speed skating Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis followed up his sporting success in Beijing with another remarkable achievement: a new speed record. He recently broke the 100 km/h mark in Norway. “I ran a world record. I did 103 kilometers per hour. Four years ago it was 93. The last part was really hard. It sounds like a small thing, but it was really hard to do. I’m literally over it Ice flew. There was a little bump, I flew, it was a crazy feeling. I gave it my all. When we were 92 km/h I started to sprint and then I heard Erben scream, so I knew I, that’s it. I’m super proud.” Erben Wennemars is a former Dutch speed skater who was present when 32-year-old Kjeld set the record on a 3km natural ice rink on Norway’s Savalen Lake. At the Beijing Olympics, Dutchman Kjeld Nuis won the gold medal in the 1500m.
