A huge fire broke out in central London on Monday requiring the intervention of a hundred firefighters. A train and metro station, as well as several nearby buildings had to be evacuated until the fire was brought under control, said firefighters. According to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, a police officer and a member of the public were taken in by the emergency services for “smoke inhalations”.
Three business premises under the train tracks near Elephant & Castle station, south of the Thames, caught fire, along with six cars and a telephone booth, firefighters said on Twitter, calling on the public to avoid the area and close the windows.
The terrorist trail is not chosen
Among the videos retweeted by London firefighters, one shows an impressive explosion. “The incident is not considered to be terrorist in nature,” according to London police, who have closed several streets to traffic.
According to the transport police, the station was evacuated and the trains do not mark the stop. According to the National Rail network, cancellations and delays can be expected until Monday evening.
