Space game No Man’s Sky lands on the Mac – still without VR

No Man’s Sky made it to the Mac much later than announced: The space game has been running in macOS since Thursday, and not just on newer Macs with an Apple chip: the developer Hello Games on the Steam gaming platform mentions an Intel in addition to macOS 12.3 Monterey as the minimum requirement -Mac with Core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and Radeon Pro 570X (4 GB).

The price is just under 60 euros, if you have already bought the Windows version on Steam, you can also play it on the Mac. The game will also soon be distributed via the Mac App Store.

The Mac version supports crossplay with players on other operating systems or consoles from Windows to Playstation and Xbox, but not the Nintendo Switch. In addition, saved games should be compatible between Windows and macOS. The Mac version includes all content updates that have expanded the game over the past few years.

The game studio Hello Games stressedthat No Man’s Sky is one of the first game titles to support Apple’s “MetalFX Upscaling”. This ensures high-quality graphics, makes the game still executable on entry-level devices and at the same time protects the battery life of MacBooks, according to the provider. Apple’s Metal 3 framework allows faster rendering of complex scenes with MetalFX upscaling, and a loading API should load textures and other details faster. Apple announced the new technology a year ago at WWDC 2022 together with macOS 13 Ventura – including the port of No Man’s Sky. The game was supposed to be released for Macs last year.

It’s no coincidence that the Mac version was released a few days before Apple’s WWDC keynote, which takes place on Monday (June 5). There, observers expect the presentation of an Apple headset that supports both virtual reality and augmented reality. The No Man’s Sky, which was much criticized at the beginning, not only relied on constant expansion, but also on comprehensive VR support. In the very near future, “another surprise is coming,” promises studio boss Sean Murray.
