At the end of Chemin de la Foresterie, in Ribérac, three gendarmes stand guard behind the twisted fence of the eponymous traveler area. Behind them, chickens fight over the bread crumbs lying at the foot of the caravans, between an old washing machine and an outdated lawn mower. On the night of Sunday April 21 to Monday April 22, after midnight, a violent shootout broke out between residents of the area and passing individuals. One person died and two others were seriously injured by gunfire.
Alerted by a witness present on site at the time of the shooting, the gendarmes from the community of brigades (COB) of Ribérac arrived first on site, followed by firefighters from the local rescue center. The two seriously injured, a man and a woman, were evacuated to the Périgueux hospital center by the emergency services where a police force was deployed in the morning to avoid groupings and prevent possible excesses. They both probably lived in the La Foresterie area, unlike the man who was shot.
“Entertainment every evening”
The neighborhood of La Foresterie heard nothing. Neither the sound of firearms nor that of the gendarmerie vehicles which intervened in large numbers. “To tell the truth, we no longer pay much attention to what is happening in the camp,” admits this couple of local residents. There is entertainment every evening, music, constant comings and goings with people who don’t live there.”
A helicopter, two dogs
Kept informed of the situation by the gendarmes, the duty magistrate of the Périgueux public prosecutor’s office traveled to the scene early this morning. A helicopter flew over the site and the military also dispatched a dog brigade made up of two dogs.
Mid-morning, a mother showed up at the entrance to the site to try to collect milk from one of the caravans for her daughter. She had to turn back, the gendarmes having received instructions not to let anyone enter the camp until further notice.
A criminal investigation was opened by the Périgueux public prosecutor’s office to shed light on this chain of violence and determine its origin. According to information from our colleagues at France Bleu Périgord, an altercation broke out on site between two groups, residents of the area on one side and people passing through. Still according to France Bleu Périgord, four people are currently in police custody.
In the Landes, the police affirm “that at this stage of the investigations, there is nothing to establish the link between this case and the gunshot which seriously injured Kendji Girac”, in Biscarrosse, on the night of Sunday to this Monday.
