South Africa: Beach visitors free baby seals from fishing net (video)

Watch the video: Beach visitors free baby seals from “ghost net”.

These two baby seals apparently had double bad luck when they got caught in the same fishing net on the South African coast. So-called “ghost nets” pose a danger to a large number of marine animals. Estimates of how many animals fall victim to human waste every year are in the hundreds of thousands. The robust yarn of fishing nets takes decades, if not centuries, to break down into smaller and smaller plastic particles. These two young animals were at least lucky enough to have made it to land and to have been found there by two energetic beach visitors. Thanks to the pocket knife we had with us, both sea lions were freed.
