Sony’s first VR glasses suffered from technical weaknesses and a chronic lack of games. With Playstation VR 2, Sony could fix both problems.

The hardware of the new PlayStation VR 2 speaks for itself: high resolution, more comfortable, integrated room tracking, only one cable to the console, new controllers with innovative haptics. The eye-tracking system in particular could prove to be a game changer in the truest sense of the word, as it provides better graphics and at the same time new forms of interaction can offer.

Sony needs to improve on the games

But what good is the best hardware without interesting software? Exactly. Playstation VR got off to a strong start Resident Evil 7 VR, but in the years that followed (too) little followed. This was shown, among other things, by monthly download charts from the Playstation Store, in which the same four or five titles were in the top group for years. Only rarely could newly released games break into this phalanx.

As part of an investor presentation, Sony’s Playstation boss Jim Ryan now revealed that PS VR 2 With more than 20 games to launch – both first and third party titles. Sony is investing “a significant amount” in partnerships with indie and third-party studios in order to be able to continuously offer attractive VR content from launch.

“That energy, effort and budget will continue to grow as the installed base of PlayStation VR 2 headsets grows as well,” says Ryan.

Sony’s big responsibility with PSVR 2

So far, Sony has only announced the VR game Horizon: Call of the Mountain, without going into the scope of the title. A common criticism of Sony’s first VR goggles was that there were more brief VR experiences than full VR games.

Sony should therefore focus more on AAA games with PSVR 2 and also plan remasters of PSVR games, which could look much nicer and be much better playable thanks to the hardware upgrade.

The fact that PSVR is now as good as dead was shown recently by the very well rated game VR game moss 2that after a PSN statistic with extraordinarily bad sales figures.

With Playstation VR 2, Sony must therefore rekindle enthusiasm for VR gaming among Playstation players – in 2016 with PSVR 1 this was almost a sure-fire success due to the great VR hype – and also reactivate existing VR players and win new ones .

It is not yet known when PSVR 2 will appear. A release in late 2022 or early 2023 is likely.
