Sony is testing games consoles with a removable disc drive

Sony continues to develop the PlayStation 5 and seems to be working hard on a new model with a removable drive. The first test kits for the modular game console have probably already been distributed to developers and are intended to replace the previous models in the future.

The Sony PlayStation 5 has now been on the market for almost two years and has since received minor adjustments. In addition to an optimized cooler inside, the weight of the game console has also been reduced and the processor has recently been revised. By changing from 7 nm to 6 nm structure size, the power consumption drops while the performance remains the same.

Although there are still no concrete details about a possible PlayStation5 Slim or Pro, there should be at least one visible design change next year. To the Journalist Tom Henderson according to Sony is currently distributing first test kits of a new PlayStation 5 with removable drive. Two people who are familiar with the relevant project are named as sources.

First and foremost, Sony wants the modular, optical drive to be good save production costs. Because it would no longer be necessary to produce two different models of the PS5 – either with or without a drive. The latest version of the console should then replace the previous models, the production of which “regular” console to be discontinued by the end of 2023 will.

Will the new PS5 come in 2024?

how Notebook check reported, the modular model could also serve as a mid-cycle refresh. So, a gaming console refresh in the middle of its expected life cycle. It is still unclear whether the modular drive will also be compatible with the digital PS5 (the variant without a fixed drive).

So far, however, there is no information as to when Sony might launch the PlayStation 5 with a removable disc drive. Tom Henderson promises at least that we “will be hearing more about it officially soon”. It is assumed that after the previous models have been discontinued, Sony could sell the new version from 2024 – unless we then also expect a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro.

In any case, from February it will finally be the new PlayStation VR2 glasses so that you can also enjoy your games in virtual reality.
