It was all so well intentioned on Monday. A piece of Times Square was fenced off, New York’s governor Kathy Hochul spoke, Mayor Eric Adams quoted Public Enemy, a Broadway singer sang Frank Sinatra’s smashing anthem “New York, New York” and so began the new city marketing campaign, for which the Empire State Building was also illuminated in red in the evening. The color came from the heart in the New York logo. This is what designer Milton Glaser came up with for his hometown in 1977, when citizens were fleeing and tourists were staying away because the city was literally in ruins.
