Solo album from “Alabama Shakes” frontwoman Brittany Howard: A masterpiece – culture

If you’re planning on listening to just one album in the foreseeable future, make sure it’s “What Now” by Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard.

There is one particularly unusual song on this album, which is really not lacking in unusual pieces. It’s called “Prove It To You”, a, well, house track. Unyielding but also springy four-to-the-floor beat, played by a real drummer, and initially completely free-standing, then soon buzzed and chirped by sounds of rather unknown origin. And then chords waft in, possibly coming from a synthesizer, or perhaps from a choir distorted with effects, and then a few melodies that could have been created by guitars and distorted basses, or just as well tuned down dentist drills.
