Söder’s Weißwurst Gate has been canceled – Bavaria

The Greens are interested in the snack that Prime Minister Markus Söder recently gave to US soldiers in Grafenwöhr. One thing is now clear: Alfred Sauter was not in the sausage kitchen for this.

The Nuremberg food blogger Markus Söder, who is also Bavarian Prime Minister, had to change the tried and tested hashtag last week. For months you have been able to find out what the CSU boss usually eats on Facebook under #söderisst or #södergrillt. Now, because of his corona infection, it became #söderisstinisolation, and there was fruit, sometimes asparagus – at least healthier than the usual bratwurst or gyros plates. One can think of Söder’s food show as ridiculous. That many on the net don’t treat him to the meals themselves, but also. Should the man starve? Perhaps some critics would secretly just like to be invited to dinner by the prime minister.

Söder sometimes issues invitations, which the Greens in the state parliament are now interested in. It’s about the 4,000 white sausages that the Free State donated to the US Army in Grafenwoehr in March. The soldiers were here to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, Söder said at the time. And they should strengthen themselves: typical of the country, hence the white sausage breakfast in his presence. In a question, the Green financial politician Tim Pargent wanted to know: What were the allocation rules for the tasting at the reception in Grafenwöhr and how expensive was the whole thing? Answer from the State Chancellery: Food was provided exclusively by the military kitchen with products from Upper Palatinate companies; the US Army subjects suppliers to a safety check. Total cost of the appointment: 13,700 euros, paid by the State Chancellery. Doesn’t sound very spectacular, Weißwurst Gate has been cancelled. What did the Greens expect? That CSU man Alfred Sauter, the notorious mask agent, stood in the sausage kitchen and turned things off? That Andrea Tandler added the mustard?

One can regard the request as petty, the skepticism as exaggerated. The Green Pargent says he just wanted to ask, suspecting that there was no scandal involved. In other cases, the green curiosity about Söder’s invitations has already brought insights, in 2021 a noble reception turned out to be largely a “men’s group”. Söder invited in Grafenwöhr and paid the bill, like in the tavern, says Pargent – everything is okay. Of course, one can argue about the issue itself: whether it is “more serving the state or serving the community”.
