“Fastnacht in Franconia” takes place on Friday evening. Of course Markus Söder is also there. Many political poison darts are also expected.

Update from February 2nd, 4:55 p.m.: “Breaking News: Secret revealed,” writes Markus Söder and reveals his costume for “Fastnacht in Franconia” with a photo on Instagram and X. The CSU leader goes to the event as Otto von Bismarck. “Many called him the honest broker of Europe. And as Franz Josef Strauss himself said: Sometimes the Bavarians have to be the last Prussians,” he writes about the picture. Despite the mood of crisis, you can really celebrate, especially during carnival.

“Former Reich Chancellor… great power fantasies again?” one person commented on the Söder photo on Instagram. “Finally back in the time from which your political ideas come, colleague?” someone writes maliciously. “Otto von Bismarck achieved really important things, such as introducing pension insurance. From you, on the other hand, all you hear is complaining, at least I don’t have any major achievements in mind for German politics,” concluded one woman. “Mega costume,” says someone on X in praise terms.

Big secret: What disguise is Söder surprising with this year? “Fastnacht in Franconia” this evening

First report from February 2nd, 3 p.m.: Veitshöchheim – “Fastnacht in Franconia” will take place on Friday evening, February 2nd. For many people it is the political event of the year. Above all, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) makes no secret of how much he is looking forward to the BR show with cult status.

“Fastnacht in Franconia” on Friday evening: Söder is ready

“Fastnacht in Franconia” is a ceremonial meeting of the Franconian Carnival Association that has been taking place since 1987. It has been taking place in Veitshöchheim, Lower Franconia, near Würzburg, since 1988. The participants traditionally include a large number of Bavaria’s top politicians, who usually appear in disguise and are allowed to listen to political satire and poison darts.

In the last few days, Markus Söder posted two videos on Instagram that are about “Fastnacht in Franconia”. In the first he presented his best costumes, in the second he shows himself in a costume shop looking for the right costume for this year’s carnival.

As always, this year it remains a big secret what the Bavarian Prime Minister is dressing up as. But in the video he gives a spoiler: It won’t be the frog prince.

“Fastnacht in Franconia”: Competition for Söder this year also outside of Bavaria

In 2023, Söder appeared as a tribal elder at the first post-Corona carnival – to lead Bavaria through the storms, as he himself described it on Instagram. This year, Söder will present a new costume from 6 p.m. – and will be looking forward to Cologne. The costume meeting will take place there, where North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) will also appear in costume, according to his own announcement. (fhz)
