Söder earns ridicule with NFL selfies

The NFL in Munich: A big day for all fans in the city – and apparently also for the Bavarian Prime Minister, as he showed on social media.

In the second NFL game in Europe, not only did the sporting performance attract attention – the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) triggered a hail of ridicule and criticism on social media with his appearance.

Shortly before the game, he photographed himself with FC Bayern Munich player Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and was already receiving malicious comments. “Chopo-Moting thinks, ‘A fan wants a photo’,” jokes one user, while another writes: “In my next life I’ll be prime minister. €300,000 annual salary for drinking and other leisure activities. That’s what I call an unconditional basic income”.

Several users also blamed him for the fact that Söder, as the head of a Christian party, took photos beaming with joy on the day of remembrance.

The mockery gets even bigger when Söder then pulls out his cell phone at the coin toss of the game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks on the field and tries to take a selfie with Nick Ballore and his teammates – in which he is ultimately the only one in the camera is watching.

“Your appearance has absolutely no added value for the Free State of Bavaria”

“Honestly, what is the reason that you are on the field when you toss a coin? But only your own publicity, because your appearance has absolutely no added value for the game or the Free State of Bavaria …”, criticizes a user of the picture .

“Extremely uncomfortable how you pander to Mr. Söder. And by uncomfortable I mean extremely embarrassing,” writes another. A user even explains the Bavarian Prime Minister in English to “our Trump in Germany”.

There is also criticism from fans who couldn’t get any of the 68,000 seats in the Allianz Arena. “It’s sad that real fans are sitting at home and the politicians only use the game as a stage and probably don’t even know what a touchdown is …” it says, and: “How lucky Mr. Söder was when he bought the tickets. I was 1 second behind Star at 49,321”.
