In Germany, around 20 percent of people live alone – which is more than the EU average. Only in the Scandinavian countries and in the Baltic States is the value even higher.

According to statistics, significantly more people live alone in Germany than in most other countries European Union. Last year, their share nationwide was 20.1 percent and thus well above the EU average of 15.8 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Wednesday based on data from the European statistical agency Eurostat.

Only in the Scandinavian countries Finland (25.4 percent), Sweden (23.5 percent) and Denmark (23.2 percent) as well as in Lithuania (22.7 percent) and Estonia (21.8 percent) lived proportionately more people alone. The rate was particularly low in Slovakia (3.1 percent), followed by Cyprus (8.0 percent), Poland (8.5 percent), Croatia (9.6 percent) and Portugal (9.9 percent).

According to the information, women lived alone more often than men in most EU countries. Last year, around 55 percent of all people living alone in the EU were women. In addition, older people are more than twice as likely to live alone as the general population.

The Federal Office recently announced that the proportion of single-person households in Germany has more than doubled since the 1950s.
