The federal and state ministers for gender equality and women are concluding their conference in Potsdam today. It is also about better protection of women against violence.

Federal Women’s Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) believes that uniform framework conditions for help in cases of violence against women are necessary. “Every woman affected by violence and her children have the right to fast, unbureaucratic protection and good professional advice,” said Paus of the German Press Agency. “We need a nationwide legal framework for a reliable aid system.”

At the end of their conference in Potsdam today, the federal and state ministers for gender equality and women are discussing better protection for women against violence. In an application, the state of Saxony is demanding that the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs present a draft law before the end of this year. Bremen, Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt submit this application together with Saxony.

Paus said her ministry is currently “leading draft legislation to secure the right to protection and counseling nationwide – regardless of where a woman lives or what language she speaks”. She also referred to the federal funding program “Together against violence against women” for the expansion of a help system.

A round table of federal, state and local authorities is accompanying the steps towards a uniform framework for aid, said Paus. As part of the family law reform, the Federal Ministry of Justice is preparing better legal safeguards for protection against violence in custody and contact proceedings. In addition, a new coordination office for gender-specific violence is being set up in her ministry.

According to the Ministry for Women, every third woman in Germany is a victim of physical and/or sexual violence at least once in her life.
