Instead of deleting them, the parent company would rather distribute warnings in the future. According to internal discussions, the aim is to circumvent any restrictions on freedom of speech.

The Facebook group Meta will use more photos and videos generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence Leave warnings on its platforms instead of deleting them. With the change, Meta follows a recommendation from its independent supervisory board, which feared a restriction on freedom of speech. The relaxation does not apply to content with hate speech, bullying or misinformation about elections, as the company announced.

Meta wants to label content “Made with AI” based, among other things, on the metadata of the files. In addition, in-house technology will be used to automatically recognize posts created with AI. The new rules should apply to Facebook, Instagram and the short message service Threads.

Thanks to advances in AI technology, it’s becoming easier and easier to have software create deceptively real-looking images – and now videos. This can also be used to manipulate public opinion. In cases where this risk is particularly great, Meta wants to place additional markings particularly prominently.

The new labels are scheduled to be introduced in May. In July, Meta plans to abandon its previous more restrictive approach to AI content.
