Social housing: living space is more than just an apartment – economy

Unconscious building will not solve social problems – on the contrary. Before the foundation stones are laid up and down the country, the federal government must therefore be clear about what is to be created there: living space.

The goal is clear, and it’s tough: the new federal government plans to build 100,000 subsidized apartments every year soon. That would be about as many as in the entire last legislative period combined. The SPD, Greens and FDP want to spend a billion euros on this in the coming year alone and create nothing less than a renaissance in social housing. In the coalition agreement they announce, quite immodestly, a “departure in building, housing and urban development policy”, after all, living is “a basic need”. One thing, however, that millions of people can hardly or no longer satisfy.
