With around 1.7 million euros from state funds, Germany’s first social housing is currently being built using 3D printing in Lünen in the Ruhr area. With the first publicly subsidized apartment building, North Rhine-Westphalia is bringing affordable housing and innovative construction under one roof, said NRW Construction Minister Ina Scharrenbach during a visit to the construction site in Lünen. More than three quarters of the money comes from the public housing support program. It is guaranteed that the rental price will be a maximum of six euros per square meter and that the apartments will be reserved for people with low incomes. With the project, North Rhine-Westphalia wants to explore the potential of the process in the area of social housing. The experience gained during the construction of the six residential units should also serve as a basis for the planning and economic consideration of follow-up projects. The first two floors of the three-story building are being built using a 3D printer: its huge nozzle applies special concrete in centimeter-thick layers under computer control. According to the executing company, the printer requires a total of almost 100 hours of pure printing time, which represents an enormous time saving compared to conventional processes. The attic will be built using a wood hybrid construction method. Conventional methods are used for the foundation and ceilings. The house should be ready for occupancy in a year.
