National team director Rudi Völler remains optimistic after the weak German World Cup results. The time for experimenting is over for men’s national coach Hansi Flick.

Rudi Völler is not worried about the men’s home European Championship next year, despite the recent series of disappointing results from the German national soccer teams.

“You have to judge everything separately,” said the 63-year-old after the German women were eliminated in the preliminary round at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand during the week, just like the men in Qatar last winter.

Völler: The base team should get used to it

The men’s senior national team “still has a lot of room for improvement,” said the DFB director. Nevertheless, he was “convinced that we will play a good European Championship.” National coach Hansi Flick and his team would “stop experimenting a bit now” and “a basic team would have to get used to it.” But it was Flick’s “good right” that he tried something out in the last few games.” That’s normal so long before a tournament. And there are still enough games before the European Championship.

Coach Flick will now “close the circle of players a little”, announced Völler. “Of course everyone still has the chance to jump on the bandwagon. But now the year of the European Championship is being heralded. In the two international matches in September we want to see exactly the performances that give us hope of playing a good European Championship again.” In the tests in September, the DFB men meet France and Japan.
