Soccer Bundesliga: Stuttgart wrestles a point from Gladbach

Status: 16.10.2021 8:24 p.m.

Despite enormous personnel worries, VfB Stuttgart kidnapped a point on the eighth day of the Bundesliga soccer match from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The game between Gladbach, who recently won twice, and VfB ended 1: 1 (1: 1). Konstantinos Mavropanos took the lead for Stuttgart (14th minute), Jonas Hofmann managed to equalize (42nd). For Borussia, one point is a damper on the way to the top of the table, tenth place is gray midfield. As twelfth there, the Stuttgarters are probably a little more satisfied compared to their own standards.

Gladbach applies pressure, but Stuttgart hits

Borussia put pressure on the Swabians, who were particularly weak due to the corona, and were the team that determined the game. A flick of Manu Koné from the edge of the penalty area went only very thinly over the crossbar of the goal guarded by Fabian Bredlow, who was released from quarantine just in time (10th).

But right in the middle of this pressure phase, Mavropanos gathered his heart after a quarter of an hour from almost 25 meters and chased the ball into the mesh with the first VfB shot on the bottom left – his third goal of the season. It had an effect, the Borussia were now more on the ball, but no longer as determined. After a long-range shot by Ginter, which just missed the goal (18th), there were hardly any scoring opportunities for Adi Hütter’s team for a long time. On the other hand, Tanguy Coulibaly should actually have made it 0-2 after a bad pass from Koné, but his lifter went well over the box (30th).

Hofmann also does it from a distance

Shortly before half-time, Borussia increased the pressure again and kept combining around the guests’ penalty area. In the 42nd minute, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team couldn’t get the ball out of harm’s way. The beneficiary was Hofmann, who was hit by the ball in front of his feet and then, very well placed, hit the lower right corner for a deserved equalization.

In round two, the approximately 40,000 fans in Borussia Park were presented with the same picture as before: The “Elf vom Niederrhein” ran up, the Stuttgart defend bravely and lay in wait for pinpricks. However, there were hardly any top-class scoring opportunities. It took almost until the 70th minute before the audience had the scream on their lips again. After a good dribble, Alassane Pléa tried a low shot that Mavropanos just barely managed to block. Bredlow defused another attempt by Pléa (78th). In the final phase, VfB also tried its hand at relief attacks from time to time – but it remained at 1: 1.

The Gladbachers will be guests at Hertha BSC next Saturday (23.10.2021), Stuttgart will meet Union Berlin one day later.
