FC Bayern Munich scored their first win of the season against 1. FC Köln on the second Bundesliga matchday. Courageous Cologne, however, sniffed the draw for a long time.
In front of almost 20,000 spectators, the Munich team won 3: 2 on Sunday evening (August 22, 2021). The goals for Bayern were scored by Robert Lewandowski (50th minute) and Serge Gnabry (59th / 71st). Anthony Modeste (60th) and Mark Uth (62nd) met for the guests to compensate for the interim.
Baumgart: “A great game”

The first chance of the game was there for Bayern: Thomas Müller made a counterattack on the right side from a good position in the penalty area (7th), but his attempt did not find its way to goal. However, there were hardly any good chances to score, the freshly minted Supercup winners acted too imprecisely in the last third.
Whistles against Leroy Sané

This, in turn, gave the Cologne team a boost, who in turn did not play out their counter-situations precisely and thus could hardly cause any danger in front of the Bayern goal.
Not surprisingly, Nagelsmann reacted at halftime: Josip Stanisic and Jamal Musiala came for the uninspired starting eleven debutant Tanguy Nianzou and the weak Sané. The latter promptly set the scene. A Lewandowski pass put Musiala in the shooting position, but the finish from the left rushed over the housing of Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn.
Musiala provides momentum
A little later it was Musiala again who initiated the Munich tour. The youngster passed Jorge Meré in the penalty area with ease and crossed the six-yard area – Lewandowski was able to push in without being pushed. When Gnabry completed a clean attack to make it 2-0 for FCB a little later, the game seemed to have already been decided.
But Cologne remained powerful. Just one minute after Munich’s goal, Jonas Hector crossed into the center, where Modeste was allowed to head in completely unguarded for the connection goal. Again just two minutes later, the Rhinelander met again. This time the cross came from Kingsley Ehizibue, Uth gripped the ball in the near corner – and the quick equalizer was made. “We got the goals too easy, just have to defend better – collectively,” commented Nagelsmann Cologne’s double strike.
Gnabry puts the finishing touches
Now the game was completely open again. Both teams seemed willing to play to win. After all, it was the record champions who struck: After winning a second ball, Gnabry straightened the ball and fired it centrally on goal. Horn got his hands up too late and couldn’t prevent Gnabry’s double pack.
A compelling final offensive by the guests did not materialize, so that the more active Munich team could cheer at the end.
