With the introduction of a new test version, it is finally possible for a WhatsApp account to be used on other cell phones at the same time. We’ve tried the new feature and are thrilled that it’s finally available after such a long wait.
At the time of writing, the new feature is initially available in WhatsApp Beta for Android. So it’s not quite finished yet, but it seems to be working reliably. The setup is classic WhatsApp, namely very easy.
WhatsApp: Link more Android phones to an account
On another Android smartphone, you can select the 3-point menu in the top right when setting up WhatsApp in the app, in which “Add device” is now stored. You select this, which launches a new screen that shows a QR code.
Now select the 3-point menu on your main device for WhatsApp, also in the top right corner, where you can find access to “Linked Devices”. In the new menu you can “Add a device”. Now you scan the QR code of the second phone.
If it worked, the chats will be synchronized with the new device. This takes a little while. We noticed that photos and other media in chats are only reloaded at the push of a button, so the initial synchronization is limited to text and is therefore rather small.
Synchronization of chats is reliable
In the first hours with the new function, the incoming messages synchronized well, they always landed on the main device and the connected device at the same time. Incoming video calls also caused both devices to ring.
In another article I already mentionedthat I and some colleagues have been waiting for for years. We always have test devices here, now we just have to connect WhatsApp to them, but no longer move them completely.
New feature only starts in beta
There is still no information as to when WhatsApp will integrate the new feature into the final app version. If you don’t want to wait, at least download it Version 2.22.24.18 beta down to their devices.
