Snow ticker: There was hardly any train traffic in the south of Bavaria on Monday either

10.50 a.m.: Oberstdorf – some streets are only passable on one side

Due to the amount of fresh snow of up to 60 centimeters and persistent snowfall, there are significant traffic disruptions in Oberstdorf im Allgäu. The city points this out on its homepage. Some of the roads are only passable on one side. There is an “extreme danger” of broken snow, i.e. falling branches and falling trees. All emergency services at the Oberstdorf market are currently in constant use with all available emergency vehicles. Starting today, snow blowers will be used and the snow will be removed.

10:04 a.m.: The situation at Munich Central Station is still chaotic

At Munich Central Station, a queue several hundred meters long formed across the station hall in front of the information desk. Travelers hope to receive information about whether and when their trains are running. However, the railway announced in an announcement that it was not worth queuing at the information desk there, as the railway itself did not currently know when operations could resume. Three “special trains” have been provided on the tracks for passengers to stay and warm up. A few dozen passengers spent the night on the mezzanine; in the early morning they were lying on their suitcases between the shops.

9:51 a.m.: Train traffic in Swabia is still hardly possible

Rail traffic in Swabia remains severely restricted. The Bavarian Regional Railway (BRB) does not operate at all on its routes in Swabia today. Snow clearing work and damage repairs are still ongoing. Go-Ahead also points to impairments. The routes “Munich – Buchloe – Memmingen – Lindau”, “Munich – Augsburg” and “Augsburg – Ulm” are not yet back in operation. The rail replacement service between Donauwörth and Augsburg, however, is running, but significant delays are to be expected. The railway company agilis writes that disruptions are to be expected on all routes in the central network (with connections to and from Donauwörth and Ulm).

9.47 a.m.: The situation in Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate is returning to normal – but there are still power outages

After heavy snowfall in the last few days, the situation in Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate is returning to normal. As the Lower Bavaria Police Headquarters reported to BR, the police and fire brigade were called to over 700 weather-related operations from Friday evening to Sunday morning. Mostly due to fallen branches and broken trees on roads or power lines. No one was seriously injured in the accidents.

In some places, trees have fallen into power lines, which is why households are still affected by power outages on Sunday. As Bayernwerk reports on its website, most of the disruptions will be resolved over the course of the morning. In some cases it could be that cables are torn and lying on the ground. Bayernwerk warns against approaching the damaged lines.

9.27 a.m.: Danger of snowfall – Augsburg issues a ban on entry

There is also the risk of branches breaking under the weight of snow or trees falling over. The city of Augsburg has issued a ban on entry to the Augsburg city forest and the Gögginger Wäldchen, which will apply until midday tomorrow. The Botanical Garden and the Augsburg Zoo will also remain closed for the time being due to the weather and the risk of snowfall. The city points out that caution is advised throughout the city. Professional fire departments and volunteer fire departments have been on duty around the clock since yesterday, and by yesterday afternoon alone they had to go on 125 missions.

8:43 a.m.: Flight operations start again at Munich Airport – around 560 flights are cancelled

According to a spokesman, around 560 of around 880 planned flights at Munich Airport will be canceled on Sunday. Flight operations started again at 6:00 a.m. – but in view of the remaining restrictions on air traffic, passengers were asked to find out about the status of their flight before traveling.

After Online airport flight schedule planes have already taken off and landed.

8:17 a.m.: Munich Airport – 1,500 overnight stays and departures coming soon

Around 1,500 passengers spent last night in the two terminals at Munich Airport. Camp beds had also been set up in Terminal 1. A spokesman told BR. After flight operations were completely stopped yesterday, 320 of 880 flights are scheduled to be operated again today. However, no plane has taken off or landed yet. The first departures “will go out shortly,” said the spokesman.

The ice in particular caused problems for the winter service in the morning after it had become very cold during the night. Passengers who want to fly today are advised to inform themselves before traveling to the airport – also to avoid an unnecessary journey if conditions continue to be difficult.

7:34 a.m.: Südostbayernbahn train services stopped

According to official orders, train traffic on the Südostbayernbahn has been suspended on all lines until 2 p.m. on Sunday, according to Deutsche Bahn. The Südostbayernbahn runs east of Munich, between Munich, Mühldorf and Simbach.

7:23 a.m.: From Nuremberg trains to the north again

The railway expects the massive restrictions to last until Monday, but wants to resume limited operations. The Ulm area is also still severely restricted, but from Nuremberg and Stuttgart trains are running north again. Deutsche Bahn recommends finding out about planned trips on Bahn.de or in DB Navigator. At the same time, the railway asks that unnecessary trips to the Munich area be postponed if possible in order to avoid excessive capacity utilization on the first trips.

7:11 a.m.: Munich Central Station is still not accessible – helicopters are supposed to fly off routes

Munich Central Station is still not accessible for rail traffic this morning, a railway spokeswoman confirmed this to BR. As soon as the day breaks, helicopters will take off to fly the routes. Southern Bavaria was most severely affected by the snowfall: trees on the tracks and overhead lines burdened by the snowfall. Frozen signals and switches would have to be checked until the routes could be reopened.

6:52 a.m.: No S-Bahn in the Munich area

External train traffic continues to be completely suspended on all lines of the Munich S-Bahn. On the main route between Munich-Leuchtenbergring and Munich-Westkreuz there is a shuttle service every 20 minutes, like this S-Bahn Munich on their website communicates. Replacement rail transport cannot be offered due to weather conditions.

6:25 a.m.: No long-distance trains at Munich Central Station yet

Deutsche Bahn still recommends postponing trips to and from Munich. There will be no long-distance trains to or from Munich until at least 10 a.m. today. At Munich Central Station, three passenger trains were made available for passenger support. Weather-related train cancellations and delays could also occur in other parts of southern Germany.

6:21 a.m.: Impairments to sport

The ice rink roof in Straubing had to be cleared with great effort. The Georg Scherer Hall, where the ASV Dachau volleyball players play their Bundesliga home games, is currently closed and sport in Bavaria is not yet running smoothly.

The basketball game between FC Bayern and ALBA Berlin had to be canceled today because the visiting team was unable to travel to Berlin the day before the game due to the onset of winter. In other sports, teams have sometimes agreed among themselves to postpone their games in order not to take any risks on the streets.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of the ticker article stated that the team from Berlin could not travel. However, the game was supposed to take place in Berlin and FC Bayern Basketball was unable to travel. We have changed this.

6:15 a.m.: Hardly any new snowfall

There is expected to be no further fresh snow in large parts of Bavaria today. According to the German Weather Service, several centimeters of fresh snow is only expected in the eastern low mountain ranges and the Alps. In the ridge areas there are also snow drifts and a significant risk of avalanches.
