The Portuguese superstar himself provided the excitement of the game. Ronaldo clashed with opponent Ali Al Bulayhi after a throw-in and hit the central defender twice in the chest with his elbow. Al Bulayhi then sank theatrically to the ground and the referee sent Ronaldo off the pitch with a straight red. Ronaldo was apparently so angry that he even pretended to want to hit the referee.
Salem Al-Dawsari (61′) and Malcom (72′) had given Al-Hilal the lead in the second half before Ronaldo blew the fuse in the 86th minute. While outnumbered, Sadio Mané managed to make it 1-2 (90+9), but it came too late.
In the second semi-final, Al-Ittihad led by superstar Karim Benzema beat Al-Wehda 2-1, Benzema initiated the victory with a goal in the first minute.
