What has been an open secret since the beginning of the “Simpsons” was made official by Waylon Smithers in 2016: Mr. Burns’ assistant is gay. In the new episode in the USA, he finds a love partner for the first time.

It was always implied, talked about and waved the fence post, but anyone who regularly watched the “Simpsons” knew for years: Waylon Smithers is secretly gay and in love with his boss, the unscrupulous big capitalist Mr. Burns. In 2016, the series character Smithers announced this openly for the first time and as a result next weekend Smithers will go another milestone in his love life. Then namely, the submissive assistant will be shown for the first time in a love affair. This is reported by several US media.

Smithers will subsequently be in a relationship with a famous fashion designer and the gay love story will be a central part of the episode. “So often gay romances are a side thread to the plot or are shown in a flashback or as a punch line,” one of the episode writers, Johnny LaZebnik, told the New York Post. But next Sunday you will see “the beginning, the middle and however the gay relationship ends”, says LaZebnik. It will give a real insight into “how gay people date, how they meet, how it is for them”.

“Simpsons” Announcer: Such stories are hugely important

Johnny LaZebnik co-wrote the episode with his father Rob, who has been writing “The Simpsons” episodes for years. His son inspired him to the episode in which Smithers came out, the reports say.

Have "The simpsons" Richard Branson's space trip predicted?

The spokesman for the homosexual fashion designer also commented on the episode. Victor Garber is gay himself and thinks it is “extremely important that such stories are shown”. Whenever he plays gay roles, he deals with the beginnings of his career, “when I couldn’t be gay”.

The “Simpsons” is one of the most successful series of all time. The witty cartoon series about yellow people from the fictional Springfield is now in its 33rd season.
