Slowdown in job creation in the second quarter

A brake on the ascent. Private salaried employment increased by only 0.1% in the second quarter, or 19,700 net job creations, after +0.4% in the first quarter (+86,800), according to the provisional estimate published Friday by INSEE.

It is nevertheless the tenth consecutive quarter of increase. Private salaried employment exceeded its level a year earlier by 1.2% and that before the health crisis (end of 2019) by 6.2% (i.e. +1.2 million jobs). In detail, temporary employment fell again this quarter: -0.8% (-6,500 jobs) after -2.2% the previous quarter.

Declining job creation in construction

Temporary employment is 1.9% lower than its level a year ago but 1.5% higher than its pre-crisis level. Excluding temporary work, industrial employment increased by 0.2% (+6,400 jobs). It is 1.1% higher than its level a year earlier and 2% higher than its level at the end of 2019 (i.e. +62,300 jobs). In construction, employment fell by 0.3% (or -4,800 jobs) after already -0.1% in the first quarter. However, it exceeds its level at the end of 2019 by 7.5% (+110,800 jobs).

In the commercial tertiary sector, employment slowed markedly: +0.2% after +0.7% (ie +25,900 jobs after +85,900). It exceeded its level of a year earlier by 1.6% and that before the crisis by 7.7% (i.e. +899,600 jobs). In the non-market tertiary sector, it also slowed to +0.1% (+1,900 jobs) after +0.5%.
