Slipgate Ironworks is developing a sci-fi real-time strategy game – Tempest Rising

The THQ Nordic Digital Showcase has given us a glimpse of a variety of upcoming games the publisher has in store. One such project comes from Slipgate Ironworks and is a sci-fi real-time strategy game that has been under development in secret for the past three years.

Known as Tempest Rising, this title features a story centered around two warring factions, the Global Defense Forces (GDF) and the Tempest Dynasty. The concept for the narrative is that these two conflicting factions are fighting over an energy resource known as the Storm, which has grown in abundance on the borders of the Storm Dynasty due to its irradiated state following a thermonuclear war that broke out years earlier.

Being an RTS game, the gameplay revolves around guiding troop units, be they basic infantry, tanks or various other special units, around a map and accomplishing various objectives such as taking out the opposing faction’s powerhouses . Units are commanded through point-and-click moves using a mouse, and units can even damage the environment, not just enemies, by shooting explosive barrels and so on.

There will also be some level of base building in Tempest Rising, meaning players will have to create and defend a base location, which is crucial for creating new troop units and for farming resources to fuel your attacks. This could be in the form of refineries to harvest the storm themselves, or in the form of military barracks instead.

In fact, due to the nature of dueling factions, Tempest Rising will feature two campaigns, one for the GDF and one for the Tempest dynasty. On top of that, at a pre-Showcase press conference, we were told that there will be online multiplayer support for the game and that a third faction will also be present in this mode – although the finer details of that remain unclear at the moment.

As for when Tempest Rising will launch, all we know for now is that it’s set to debut on PC in 2023. As for the finer, more specific details on this game, they have yet to be revealed, but fans can look forward to seeing a demo showcasing the game’s first level at Gamescom later this month.
