Slaughterhouses – Less Meat – Economy

In the first half of the year, meat production in German slaughterhouses fell by 7.9 percent compared to the same period last year. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office. 25.8 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses as well as 353.2 million chickens, turkeys and ducks were slaughtered for almost 3.5 million tons of meat. With almost two thirds, pork is still the main product of the German meat industry. However, the amount produced fell by 10.1 percent to 2.3 million tons, as did the number of animals killed. It fell 8.9 percent to 23.8 million.
