Anyone who goes on a ski or snowshoe tour may find their hobby particularly environmentally friendly – and yet they can do a lot wrong. Recreational athletes don’t need lifts and energy-sapping artificial snow-making systems for the slopes when they trudge hundreds of meters up the mountain on foot in open terrain. In the powder snow rush, however, nobody should blindly follow every track on the slope – not only because of the possible danger of avalanches, but also to protect the animals in the sensitive mountain nature. In order to survive the nutrient-poor winters, game and especially the grouse, which is threatened with extinction, need retreat areas in which they can remain undisturbed.
