Katharina Schmid is back among the world’s top ski jumpers. After her break she shows strong performances in Japan.

For three-time ski jumping world champion Katharina Schmid, the short break from competition paid off. Schmid, formerly Althaus, came in second at the World Cup in Sapporo, Japan, giving the German jumpers their first podium finish of the winter.

After jumps of 122 and 129.5 meters, the 27-year-old Allgäu native was only beaten by the Japanese Yuki Ito. The Slovenian Nika Kriznar completed the podium in third place.

After the disappointing two-night tour with stops in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf, Schmid decided to skip the competitions in Villach and take a training block instead. For the guest appearance in She is now back in Japan. On Saturday she returned to the extended world elite with seventh place.

Behind Schmid, things still look thin in the German team. Anna Rupprecht (18th), Juliane Seyfarth (19th) and Agnes Reisch (29th) scored World Cup points, but are far from the world leaders. Selina Freitag, who was one of the elite last year, didn’t make it into the second round in 31st place.
