Six young Portuguese sue 32 countries for climate inaction

32 countries sued by six young people aged 10 to 23: here is the project of Catarina, Cláudia, Martim, Mariana, Sofia and André.

Of Portuguese origin, the group has taken on a gargantuan mission: to make 32 countries guilty of climate inaction to push them to take emergency measures against the climate crisis and greenhouse gas emissions.

The young people thus sued the 27 member countries of the European Union as well as Switzerland, Russia, Turkey, Norway and the United Kingdom before the European Court of Human Rights.

The group is supported by a team of lawyers, led by Alison Macdonald KC. The six young people are also supported by the British NGO Global Legal Action Network. The file was submitted to the European body in September 2020 and will be studied from September 27, 2023. But the decision of the Court risks taking several months, while the summer of 2023 was the hottest ever recorded.
