Status: 07/25/2021 9:03 am

Although there was rain, the areas affected by the flood disaster were spared from severe thunderstorms. However, the all-clear has not yet been given. Floods occurred in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

It remained quiet during the night, according to the fire brigade and disaster control from the flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. Unlike in Belgium and in southern Germany. There was flooding due to thunderstorms and heavy rain.

However, the situation remains tense in western Germany, because the risk of local storms has not yet been averted. From noon onwards, heavy showers and thunderstorms can occasionally occur again.

Floods in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria

Last night in Germany it hit Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria in particular. There were reports of hail, storms and heavy rains. In the Allgäu the fire brigade had to according to the br move out several times because of fallen trees and full cellars. However, the situation relaxed again quite quickly.

In Stuttgart there was flooding at the main train station because the sewer system could not absorb the water quickly enough. In Heilbronn, too, streets were temporarily flooded. Major damage was done after one Report of the swr but not reported.

When small amounts of rain become a problem

Contrary to previous fears, it remained almost dry in the flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. After some rainfall in the afternoon, it hardly rained at night in the regions, said a spokeswoman for the German Weather Service (DWD) of the dpa news agency. For example, in the northern Eifel yesterday, an average of five to ten liters of rain fell per square meter.

The spokeswoman also emphasized that in the current situation even small amounts of precipitation could become a problem, as drains are clogged and the sewer systems are damaged.

Local storms are still possible

From noon onwards, some strong local thunderstorms can be expected again today – most likely south of the Danube. Heavy rain, hail and storms are also possible again, according to the DWD. “The air is very humid and warm, it can boil,” said the spokeswoman for the German Weather Service. So far, however, the prospects are normal for a summer’s day. There are no severe weather warnings so far. As was the case yesterday, it is hardly possible to make precise predictions of where storms will occur. It is recommended to observe the Rain radars and the Severe weather warnings from the DWD.

Replacement for THW in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate

After just under a week, the first replacement of the auxiliary staff of the Technical Relief Organization (THW) in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate takes place. The employees of the northern association had previously returned to the north, as the regional association of the Hamburg THW announced. Their replacement made their way to the storm-ravaged areas during the night. They too will be replaced by the next team in a week.

The technical relief organization is the voluntary organization of the federal government. The technical and logistical work on disaster and civil protection is carried out by around 80,000 volunteers. The THW can also be used worldwide by the federal government.
