Sinti and Roma: The Story of a Police Scandal – Politics

Tiziano Lehmann was eleven when he was arrested, tied up and racially insulted without reason. The unusual thing about it: the Sinto boy reports the officials – and wins in court. The story of a fairly everyday police scandal.

Romulus and Remus are the names of the two high-rise buildings, built in 1969, which were planted in the middle of this settlement. The founders of the city of Rome, of all things, as if it couldn’t be one size smaller. Buildings stand around them like tiny boxes, gray post-war structures, the plaster under the window sills turning dark. In between a pizzeria, a shisha shop and in the middle these two towers, fourteen floors high. A shirtless man stands on a balcony on the first floor of Romulus, holding a bottle of beer. Rusty satellite dishes, clotheslines, faded awnings. There are better places to be a kid.
