Single dishwasher: a comparison of dishwashers for small households

The washing up is necessary dirty work. How good that there are single dishwashers who take care of it. But how useful is such a helper really?

Vacuuming, wiping, cleaning, washing, dishes – there is a lot of unpaid work at home that almost nobody likes to do. So it is logical that mankind has always been looking for machines to do this. Life without a washing machine, vacuum cleaner and dishwasher is unthinkable today. However, the latter is still one of the luxury goods in the kitchen.

There are two main reasons for this: First Not all apartments offer enough space for a dishwasher. Singles in big cities can even be happy if they have four hotplates. And Secondly the dishwasher turns a mediocre job of washing dishes into two annoying work steps, namely loading and unloading the dishes.

Quite a few people therefore live with their dishwasher as if they were out of a “suitcase” – clean cutlery is fished out of the machine, dirty items find their place on them. And if you’re not sure yet whether the dishes are really dirty or whether you’re adding a second round of Nutella bread, place the cutting edge of the knife on the edge of the plate in such a way that it protrudes into the air and doesn’t get any more dirty.

Midea ST 5.31 mini dishwasher

  • place settings: 3
  • Consumption per wash cycle: 6 liters
  • Dimensions (W | H | D): 42×43.5×46.5cm

Anyone who finally knows that he or she will not eat a second loaf puts the dirty knife in the Midea ST 5.31. It offers space for three place settings. According to European standard EN50242 a place setting includes one each:

  • Dinner plate with a diameter of 26 cm
  • soup plate (23 cm)
  • dessert plate (19 cm)
  • a saucer (14 cm)
  • a cup (0.2 liters)
  • a drinking glass (250 ml)
  • Knife (203mm)
  • a fork (184 mm)
  • a soup spoon (195 mm)
  • Teaspoon (126mm)
  • dessert spoon (156 mm)

The dishwasher offers a choice of seven cleaning programs. The water consumption per flush is six liters. The integrated water tank, which you have to fill before rinsing, is also big. A water connection is therefore not absolutely necessary, which is why you can take the dishwasher with you into the caravan. In terms of design, the Midea ST 5.31 Mini is one of the fancier dishwashers. Its viewing window is a real eye-catcher.

Hanseatic HG5544D63602ES

  • place settings: 6
  • Consumption per wash cycle: 6.5 liters
  • Dimensions (W | H | D): 55×43.8x50cm

In contrast, the wraps itself in a somewhat conservative look Hanseatic HG5544D63602ES. At 6.5 liters, its water consumption is slightly higher than the Midea model. The single dishwasher also offers twice as much space as the first device: the Hanseatic HG5544D63602ES cleans a total of six place settings per wash cycle.

And that despite the fact that it is only eleven centimeters wider, six centimeters lower and slightly higher at 55 x 43.8 x 50 centimeters (width, height, depth). Compared to the Midea ST 5.31, the Hanseatic device offers one program less. Here you can choose from six washing programs. However, the table dishwasher does not fit in the mobile home. It must be connected to a water supply.

  • Consumption per wash cycle: 5 liters
  • Dimensions (W | H | D): ‎56x56x54 cm

The Klarstein Amazonia Mini is slightly larger than the Hanseatic HG5544F63602EW, but only offers space for two place settings. It looks similar to the Midea ST 3.20N and also offers a viewing window. Like the Midea device, the Amazonia Mini uses five liters of water. And the number of programs is the same for the first three mini-dishwashers: you can choose from six programs.

But something makes the Amazonia Mini special: As the only single dishwasher, it offers a drying function by allowing fresh air to circulate. In this way, the dishes remain odor-free for a maximum of 72 hours if you forget to empty the dishwasher. This dishwasher also feels at home on camping trips because it can work with a water tank.

Sense and nonsense small dishwasher

With single dishwashers, loading and unloading is another no less annoying work step. A water tank slumbers in the small appliances, which the person living alone has to fill with water before the wash cycle. Of course, you can also connect the single dishwasher to the water supply. But that also means that you should actually have room for a larger dishwasher. That makes more sense 99 percent of the time. This is due to the filling volume of the larger household appliances.

With similar water and energy consumption, the large dishwashers clean significantly more plates, glasses, etc. and therefore do not have to work as often as the single dishwashers. And that protects the environment and your wallet. Therefore, if possible, a large dishwasher should be used always to be favoured. A single dishwasher is really only for people who hate washing up and who live alone with a mini-kitchen or a mobile home. By the way: The drain hose of a single dishwasher most often protrudes into sinks during the washing process. Doesn’t look particularly fancy.
