Although Udo Lindenberg has been making music for more than 50 years, the native of Hamburg only had to turn 76 to get his first number one hit in the charts with “Komet”.

The Hamburg panic rocker Udo Lindenberg is more successful in the single charts than ever before in his career with the song “Komet” together with German rapper Apache 207. According to the record company Warner Music, the song, which was released more than ten weeks ago, is now the longest German-language single at the top of the German charts for 16 years.

“I’m flashed, we’re all very flashed,” said Lindenberg (76) in Hamburg. “And it keeps going. It’s a crazy flight, a marathon.”

According to Warner Music, “Komet” has already been streamed more than 100 million times. The song with catchy tune potential is also Lindenberg’s first number 1 single in his now more than 50-year musical career. The single has already been sold more than 400,000 times – this is considered platinum status in the industry.

So far, the MTV unplugged song “Cello” (with Clueso, fourth place) and 40 years ago the catchy tune “Sonderzug nach Pankow” (fifth place) were the top-ranked songs by the panic rocker. It is already the eleventh number one song for the 25-year-old rapper Apache 207.

A similar surprise success as now with “Komet” was Lindenberg’s album “Stark wie Zwei” 15 years ago. He had written and sung the songs for this together with Annette Humpe, Jan Delay, Silbermond and Helge Schneider, among others. This earned him a top spot in the album charts for the first time in his long career.

His record company Warner Music Central Europe awarded Lindenberg platinum status for “Komet” and for the album “MTV unplugged 2” and gold for the album “Udopium” in the Laeiszhalle on Thursday evening in the presence of his large panic family.
