The Norwegian came to Germany as a young woman and started her career. That was in the 1960s. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has now awarded her a medal.

The Norwegian pop singer Wencke Myhre (74) has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented her with the medal on Friday in her hometown of Oslo.

Myhres artistic work (“He is in the gate”, “He has a bright red rubber boat”) has been building a bridge between Norway and Germany since the 1960s. «In both countries you are an icon and an ambassador of the heart. And your messages have already produced many catchy tunes, ”said Steinmeier in the city’s opera house.

Myhre also campaigned for cancer to be no longer a taboo subject. Just a year after her own cancer diagnosis, she went straight from her radiation treatment on stage and sang in front of 40,000 people. “Your courage to live is also one of the dreams we carry within us,” said Steinmeier, who also awarded the former bishop and politician Gunnar Stålsett the Cross of Merit.

«I have always received a warm and warm welcome in Germany. And for me, Germany has become like my second home country, »said Myhre. She assured: “I will carry this award in my heart forever.”
