On the third evening, “Sing mein Song” was all about Montez’s work. Alli Neumann delivered the highlight – but she was denied the due trophy for the best performance.

Everyone knew who was meant when host Johannes Oerding announced that this evening was about “the singing rapper”: Montez’s music was the focus of the third show of “Sing my song – the exchange concert”. At the same time, the audience also got closer to the person behind the artist. He was born in Bielefeld in 1994 as Luca Manuel Montesinos Gargallo. His father is Spanish. “Together we are a complete Spaniard,” said Montez, referring to Nico Santos, who grew up in Mallorca.

He describes his childhood as happy – until his parents separated. There was young Luca when he was 13. At that time he started making music and came to rap through his idol Eminem. In 2011 he was voted “Newcomer of the Year” by the online portals “Hiphop.de” and “Juice”. However, it took ten years before he finally celebrated his big breakthrough with “Auf & ab” and landed a number 1 in Germany.

“Sing meine Song” is dedicated to the work of Montez

Montez describes this experience as a “huge privilege” that very few artists are granted in their lives. This hit is also the reason why the 29-year-old is sitting under the South African sky tonight and listening to other artists interpret his music.

Clueso also opens the evening with this “up & down”. He’s “in the mood to close the song,” says the man from Erfurt. And he succeeded, at least he made everyone present dance.

Alli Neumann then proves that this does not necessarily have to be a relevant quality criterion. Everyone stays seated during their country version of “Marlboro Light” – but probably mainly out of emotion. The singer presents a completely unique version and even breathes a pinch of sex into her performance with lascivious poses – the clear highlight of the evening.

Much predictable

Expected performances follow: Nico Santos dresses “Irgendwann da” in his familiar, radio-friendly pop-funk robe, then Silbermond singer Stefanie Kloß adds electric guitars to the song “Engel”.

In between, Montez is allowed to present his new single “Love in Danger”, before LEA sings the song “Mon” created in cooperation with Badmómzjay and Johannes Oerding ends the evening with his version of “If I Were You”.

When Montez is then given the task of awarding the flower for the best performance of the evening, he refuses. He doesn’t want to emphasize anyone, nor does he want to ignore anyone and perhaps offend them. So instead of honoring Alli Neumann, he decides to give the award to the band.

That fitted well into the overall picture of a refreshingly down-to-earth pop star who is alien to any form of special status and power – even if it’s the bestowal of a flower. You just have to like him, this Montez.

“Sing my song” is always on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. on Vox. The current episode is available on RTL+.
