Simon Raven’s novel “How Shadow Comes”: Ancient but Critical – Culture

The wonderful ten-volume novel cycle, which the British author Simon Raven gave under the beautiful title “Alms for Forgetting”, is now reaching its home stretch. This year, the last two volumes of the translation, which began in 2020 at Elfenbein-Verlag, are scheduled to appear: a major achievement of more than three thousand pages in the end, for which the translator Sabine Franke can hardly be thanked enough, not least when one considers her almost incomprehensible speed . It took its author twelve years (1964 to 1976) to write the English original, always remaining in touch with advancing contemporary history.
