Roman Abramovich will retire at Chelsea but remains popular with fans. That was also evident in Burnley.

Chelsea fans paid homage to their current owner, Roman Abramovich, with a controversial gesture. Before the start of the Blues’ Premier League game at Burnley FC, they interrupted the minute of applause in honor of the victims of the war in Ukraine by chanting “Roman Abramovich, Roman Abramovich”. This was heavily criticized on social media.

The Russian Abramovich announced on Wednesday the club wanting to sell after 19 years of ownership. The background is the far-reaching economic sanctions against Russian business people and politicians as well as the ostracism of Russian athletes in all areas. “It hurts to part with the club in this way,” shared the oligarch.

Abramovich led Chelsea to the top of Europe

Abramovich is extremely popular with fans and many current and former players of the Londoners. During his reign, he led the club into the circle of top European teams and invested more than two billion euros in player transfers. In the time since taking over the 55-year-old, Chelsea have won the Champions League twice and the English Championship five times. Club legend John Terry was criticized from British politics for a picture he posted on social networks. This shows him and Abramovich together with the Premier League trophy. Terry wrote: “The best!”

The Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss is considered to be interested in taking over the club. Wyss emphasized to the Swiss newspaper Blick that he could imagine getting started. However, the basic conditions would have to be checked first.
