The VOX show “Shopping Queen” will celebrate its anniversary from March 18th. What is planned for the special week?

The styling program “Shopping Queen” with designer Guido Maria Kretschmer (58) is dedicated to a milestone anniversary: ​​the VOX format has 2,500 episodes. In the week from March 18th to 22nd (at 3 p.m. on VOX, too on RTL+), viewers can expect special anniversary editions.

The anniversary

As usual, five candidates will fight for the shopping crown this week and go on a shopping spree to find the perfect outfit. Lena (29, digital sales manager), Maike (50, dance teacher), Olga (48, customer advisor), Rosi (80, pensioner) and Miri (30, parking supervisor) are competing in Berlin with this motto: “Hurrah, who is Guido there in person! Celebrate 2,500 episodes of Shopping Queen with your new designer piece!”.

In the special week, the candidates have to create a look in which a designer piece selected by Kretschmer takes center stage. As a big surprise, the designer personally presents the participants with the garment, which they can then call their own. For the grand finale and the awarding of a 1,000 euro prize, we then head back from the capital to Hamburg.

The history

On January 30, 2012, the VOX broadcaster showed the very first episode of the styling documentary format “Shopping Queen”. From week to week the show moves to a different city to crown the respective “Shopping Queen”. As a rule, five participants each have to go shopping on one day of the week with a specific theme in mind. They have a limited budget and a limited amount of time and then have to present their complete look on the catwalk. The competitors evaluate the result so that a winner can be chosen at the end.

A special highlight of the show are Kretschmer’s comments, which he makes on the candidates’ shopping trips and which he records in a studio after each shoot. His entertaining comments are shown again and again in the show. According to VOX, he has sat in the green box for 3,901 hours to date for the ratings. In total, he awarded the maximum number of points of 10 for a look 76 times; two times so far he has received 0 points.

According to the broadcaster, the program, which won the German Television Prize in the “Best Docutainment” category in 2014, has already been filmed in around 65 cities and in over 10,000 stores. She has also visited Austria, Switzerland, Mallorca, Ibiza, Antalya, Rome, Pisa, Barcelona and Marseille. In Germany, the most filming took place in Berlin (50 times), Hamburg (48) and Cologne (36). 2,505 candidates have taken part so far.

The show has reinvented itself again and again in various special editions. There were wedding, couple, family, men, dog and twin specials. From April 2012 there was also a celebrity edition with “Celebrity Shopping Queen”. In June 2023, however, a VOX spokeswoman said at the request of the news agency spot on news: “We are currently not planning a new edition.” Instead, there will continue to be special programs in the regular “Shopping Queen” episodes.

Guido Maria Kretschmer: “I still enjoy it”

“My personal highlight from 2,500 shows of ‘Shopping Queen’ is that I still enjoy it,” says Guido Maria Kretschmer in a VOX interview. “Every day when I sit there, the door opens and we stand in front of an apartment door or front door, somewhere in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, wherever we are, I still think: ‘Oh now a new woman is coming, who takes us into her world.'”

He hopes that “with another 2,500 episodes he’ll still be awake at the top and tight at the bottom” and “that I’ll have the feeling 2,500 more times that when a door opens, I’m happy that I’m doing it.” And so the motivated designer also has ideas for the further consequences: “I think a motto like ‘Show me what’s inside you’ or ‘Show me who you could actually be, or even are’ would be great. I always say, Fashion is the skin of the soul and that’s why such a motto would fit so well.”
